No Main Post Office in Morpeth?

4.05.00pm GMT Mon 18th Feb 2008

The Co-op has given notice that it will cease to run Morpeth Back Riggs Post Office at the end of 2008. Post Office Ltd wants a counter service to continue in Morpeth town centre, but it has to find a partner willing to take over from the Co-op in suitable premises otherwise Morpeth will not have a main post office. Staff are understandably anxious about their jobs and customers are stunned when they hear that closure is an actual possibility. Mark Horton, Lib Dem Chairman of Morpeth Town Council has said that no post office in the town centre would be "a disaster" for Morpeth.
