Flood Risk - Morpeth's Wake-up Call

10.00.00am GMT Mon 3rd Dec 2007

These were the scenes in the Morpeth floods of 1963 before the global warming and climate change ‘wake-up call’. Now the risks are higher.

The recent terrible events in Yorkshire and Gloucestershire should be giving a wake-up call to local Councils and the Environment Agency about the continuing major risk of flooding in Morpeth. We only escaped by the good fortune that the heavy rain did not come this far north. Next time we may not be so lucky.

Lack of flood protection plans

These were the scenes in the Morpeth floods of 1963 before the global warming and climate change ‘wake-up call’. Now the risks are higher.

Official reports show that up to 1000 properties in Morpeth are at risk from severe flooding, but plans to protect the town by eliminating the flood risk have yet to get off the ground. High Stanners, the Town Centre and Low Stanners are at the most risk, with predicted flood depths up to 2 metres (6 feet).

No money

The Environment Agency have identified what needs to be done, but can't get on with the work because of a queue for Government funding. There is no prospect of the work being carried out for at least 2 or 3 years and it could take much longer if the recently flooded areas get more priority.

Lib Dems say Morpeth needs protecting and are pressing for action

It can't be acceptable that this major risk to homes and livelihoods is allowed to continue. Local Lib Dem councillors will be doing everything in their power to press the Councils, MPs and the Environment Agency itself to make sure that Morpeth gets the priority it deserves. Meanwhile, we urge residents in the at-risk areas to sign up to the Environment Agency's Flood Warning system by calling 0845 988 1188. With a few hour's notice of the flood peak you may be able to save some of your more valuable documents and possessions. It is worth thinking about what action you would take in such an emergency. You should also check your Home Insurance Policy to make sure it covers you properly for flooding. Next time it could be our turn.
