Ed Hillier - Lib Dem Candidate
I have always voted Liberal Democrat, but have only recently become more active as a Lib Dem supporter. As a Morpeth resident I have been very impressed by the improvements being made across the town and the work done by Lib Dem Councillors and I would like to play a more active role in helping with this work. So I have decided to stand for the Town Council and hope to be able to play my part in improving Morpeth for residents, workers and visitors.
A recent survey of Morpeth residents found that more facilities for teenagers are needed in the town. As a secondary school teacher and having my own young children, I would like to use my skills and experience to help develop such facilities. I want to help Morpeth to be a teenage friendly town with a range of activities and facilities to choose from. Offering young people places to go and giving them attractive things to do is, I think, one way to reduce vandalism and anti-social behaviour.
I have a long-standing interest in sport. I am a member of Morpeth Harriers and I have competed at triathlon for several years. A highlight so far was representing Great Britain in my age group at the European Championships in 2009.
Environmental issues are very important to me and I am a long-standing member of SUSTRANS the UK charity dedicated to enabling people to make smarter travel choices. I try to cut down on my own carbon footprint by regularly commuting to work in Newcastle by bike.
My wife and I live in Morpeth South Ward and we have three young children aged 5, 3 and 4 months. Having a young family has given me new perspectives on life and emphasised how important it is to have the right people as local councillors and representatives as they not only deal with today's issues on our behalf, but play a big part in shaping the future of our local area. I would like to be given the opportunity to do everything I can to help ensure that Morpeth continues to be as diverse and attractive as it is today and to make our town an even better place to live.
